Porsche began in 1931 when Professor Ferdinand Porsche offered consulting and vehicle development through his company Dr. ing. h. c. F. Porsche GmbH.
His first major assignment included designing a car for the people which translates to Volkswagen in German. In 1939, the Porsche 64 has been created which included a design similar to the Volkswagen Beetle.
Although this seemed like a great car, Ferdinand's son Ferry Porsche was unhappy with the production cars available on the market. He decided to take matters into his own hands and build his own car from scratch. A few years later the 356 was introduced and road certified in 1948.
This car featured a light weight rear engine vehicle offered in a coupe of convertible. The Porsche 356 was built until 1965 (roughly 150,000 cars built) shortly after the 911 was introduced. Buyers complained because the price was nearly double that of the 356. Although the 912 was introduced to cater to those customers needs, the 911 carried on Porsches name (Luxury Sports Cars). The 911 series is currently offered from 2006+ in the 997 models.
They also have a supercar out called the Carrera GT. This car is equipped with a V10 engine pumping out 605 horsepower capable of traveling 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds and reaching a top speed of 205 mph.
With a price tag of $500,000, Porsche offers equivalent performance with their GT2 model released under $200,000. The new GT2 is a race car out of the box. The engine comes from the Porsche 911, but is twin turbocharged which substantially raises its performance to 530 horsepower; this is 50 horsepower above the recent GT2 model. It travels from 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds and has a top speed of 204 mph. If Ferdinand Porsche saw where Porsche has traveled in the last 56 years, he would be amazed what he and his son built.
